Global Citizenship is a term widely used for different purposes and meanings. There is no single consensus on the meaning of global citizenship. “The concept of global citizenship originated in the times of ancient Greece and during the era of the Roman Empire” (Dower, p.6). Hans Schattle also measures that “not only has “global citizenship” emerged as a variant within the concept of citizenship, but the concept of “global citizenship” contains many variants and sources of internal division.” “During the last decade , the term “Global citizenship” has been increasingly communicated in public discourse by individuals across a wide variety of political, social, and economic institutions – elementary schools that encourage children to embrace other cultures” (Schattle, p. 219). faster than most of us can keep up with. Technology is one of those drivers of change, and people are becoming more connected to each other around the world than ever before through the use of the Internet and as people they become more connected they begin to see themselves as becoming or fulfilling the role of citizenship not only through their natural place of birth, but as a citizen of the world. There are many ways available to understand citizenship or being a global citizen. On a legal-political basis, citizenship is a status conferred on individuals by the political communities to which they belong. According to Dower, citizenship in the state is or implies a formal relationship with the state. TH Marshall defines citizenship as full belonging to communities and is made up of three elements which are political rights, civil rights and social rights (Dower. p.36-37). It can also be defined as native or na...... middle of paper ...... keeping its prices low by condoning the poor working conditions in the foreign factories that produce most of its goods. In conclusion, as According to Dower, being a global citizen does not necessarily mean being a good global citizen. This means we don't have to be human beings who profit to be global citizens; one small step is enough to do something. Standing up for something you believe in, helping the unfortunate, stopping someone from making a racist comment is all part of being a global citizen. Schattle argued that a good citizen should know and have the ability to both be governed and govern, and this is precisely the virtue of a citizen (p.121). A citizen of the world would be one who feels the ability to influence global decisions and accepts the resulting behavior. All individuals have duties and responsibilities to do so.
