Safety was first addressed by assessing patients to recognize those at greatest risk of falls and implementing interventions as outlined by hospital policy. The intervention must be timely as it is implemented when the patient is admitted to the facility to ensure its effectiveness. Following hospital policy regarding the application of a fall risk armband, identifiable socks, use of equipment such as bed alarms and appropriate signage provides a checklist to maintain the efficiency of prescribed interventions. Addressing these issues is important to reduce falls among patients in intensive care settings. Leadership has responsibility for developing and implementing policies to assist in reducing falls while receiving care in an acute care setting. Additionally, leadership serves as a model for staff expectations, implementing interventions that include safe, high-quality patient care.
