About Hoysaleswara ShrineThe Hoysaleswara shrine is dedicated to ruler Shiva, who is the destroyer of the universe according to Hinduism. This shrine was built during the 12th century and the Hoysala ruler Vishnuvardhana built it. Throughout the 14th century Muslims attacked Halebidu and plundered its wealth and riches. The sanctuary was razed and fired by the rulers. Hoysaleswara was also called Dwarasamudra or Dorasamudra. The Hoysaleswara Shrine has two altars, one dedicated to Hoysaleswara and an alternate one for Shantaleswara (named after Shantala Devi, ruler of Lord Vishnuvardhana). Remaining on a raised stage, the sanctuary is made of chloritic schist. (Soapstone, otherwise called soapstone). Both altars are placed next to each other, facing the east course. The altar embodies the Shiva lingam (phallic type of ruler Shiva), the widespread image of Master Shiva. Also alternate holy places, there is a sacred place dedicated to Master Surya. Here, the Sun God is depicted in the 7 feet tall image. The corridors contain stunning images of Nandi, the attendant of Master Shiva.
