In the short story “Sugar,” Sharon Leach demonstrates the parallel between the protagonist's sexual desires and her need to provide for her impoverished family. From the first line the protagonist, Sugar, reveals her most intimate erotic desires by describing “the girl in the leopard bikini” (170). Sugar's subsequent actions were self-rationalized to "keep [her] mother, sisters, and brothers fed and clothed for a while" (178). The vivid imagery, pattern of dismissal, and first-person narrative facilitate Leach to emphasize the human tendencies of sexual behavior by observing the importance of earning a living to provide for one's family and ultimately afford the conveniences that make Sugar envious of the guests of the 'hotel. the imagery used gives this story great depth as it brings Sugar's encounters to life in the reader's mind. From the beginning, Leach quickly establishes Sugar as a sexually ambivalent woman as he illustrates the girl's strong legs and tresses in the leopard-print bikini "hanging down her back cascading like a waterfall halfway down”....
