Topic > Neuroenhancers: are they the answer to our problems?

Margaret Talbot's article “Brain Gain” discusses the growing underworld of neuroenhancing drugs. In his article he writes about how more and more people are taking neuroenhancers to improve their cognitive functions. People take neuroenhancers because they feel pressure to compete and perform well in this stressful society. Talbot's articles show how this company has become so obsessed with efficiency and so competitive that users are citing justifiable reasons for taking these neuroenhancers. These neuroenhancers are drugs that should be used by people suffering from cognitive disorders such as ADHD. Using neuroenhancers for competitive gain is wrong on so many levels. The use of neuroenhancers is unethical and causes philosophical problems. There are also physical risks from using neuroenhancers. Using neuroenhancers for competitive gain and not to treat a disorder is unethical. Neuroenhancers such as Adderall and Ritalin are used to treat people with disorders that disrupt their normal cognitive functions and suffer from severe cognitive impairment (Talbot 2). Now more and more “overly busy people” are taking these drugs to become “functional and more busy” (Talbot 2). They are taking these drugs to make the impossible possible. Furthermore, these drugs are used by people who waste their time partying and engaging in activities that are “bad for their performance” (Talbot 2). They are too busy participating in other activities and neglect their academic work. These students cheat and use these drugs to gain a competitive advantage. It's totally unfair to students who do their homework with neuroenhancers. Furthermore,… midway through the paper… society has changed. Giving one hundred percent is no longer enough. Now people need to take drugs to keep going. Thanks to these social pressures there are demands for drugs like Adderall. Neuroenhancers are not the answer to our problems. Neuroenhancers are dangerous on so many levels. It causes physical, mental and philosophical harm. They are used by lazy people who have poor time management skills and who don't want to work hard. This shows how far our society has fallen. People resorted to drugs to make their lives easier. No one wants to make sacrifices or put in hours of hard work. They want everything handed over to them. They don't care what the neuroenhancers are doing to their body. They believe the reward is worth the risk. Hopefully users realize what they are doing and stop using neuroenhancers before they suffer permanent damage.
