The 19th century was an unfavorable time for women and their rights. It was a time when society was dominated by males, where the primary source of family income and even the final decisions in the home were left to the man. Child-rearing was often left to women, and women of an upper class were responsible for managing the maids and nurses who cared for the children. Today's modern 21st century represents a huge leap forward in women's rights and independence. Nora, Mrs. Linde and Anne-Marie have had to make extremely difficult choices regarding their lives and I believe that today women's lives are significantly better and women's roles in modern society have been greatly expanded. The marriage between Torvald and Nora is rather one-sided. While Torvald served as the main source of income for the family and made the final decisions. A man who does not believe in debt: “No debt! Never borrow! Something of freedom has been lost – and something of beauty too – in a house founded on loans and debt. (Ibsen 890). To help support his family, Torvald worked many jobs for long hours. “He undertook all kinds of work that kept him going morning and night.” (Ibsen 890). The amount of effort Torvald put in had very negative effects on his health: “It wore him out and he became deathly ill.” (Ibsen 890) and illness devastated Nora. By planning to move her family to Italy to save Torvald, Nora broke the law and borrowed money without her husband's consent." The trip would cost 4,800 crowns. “Four thousand eight hundred crowns. What do you say?" (Ibsen 896), sum that Torvald nor Nora possessed. Nora had no choice but to borrow money to finance the trip but... middle of the paper... voting is allowed, some can become engineers, scientists or doctors. There is no limit to what women can do because of their gender. Although in terms of employment it is said that women earn less than men for the same job, I believe this is not a factor of complete equality. I understand the fact that today women can earn on average 77 cents for every dollar a man earns, (Whitehouse.gov), this fact does not diminish the reality that there are no limits to what a woman can do and that we as a species have made great progress in terms of equality for all, not only in terms of race but also gender. From working as the CEO of a multi-billion dollar company as Marissa Mayer at Yahoo (Yahoo Executive Team), to become the first woman in space like Sally Ride (Who Was Sally Ride?), it is clear that today's society can accept women being able to handle any type of career.
